Have you ever decided today’s the day you finally hit “record”? You’re ready. You’ve got your coffee. Your hair’s in a messy bun. You swear this is the moment you’re going to nail that course video, podcast episode, or Instagram Reel.

Then, five seconds in—you freeze.
Your voice sounds weird.
You suddenly hate how your face moves.
You wonder, “Who let me do this?”

Girl, I’ve been there. And not just once.

This post is for the woman who’s starting something new and feels like she’s failing already. It’s for the course creator recording her first lesson. The mompreneur launching her first podcast. The business beginner trying to show up online and feeling like a deer in headlights.

Here’s the truth no one really warns you about:

The only way to get better at something… is to be really bad at it first.

And believe it or not, that’s actually the good news.

My Cringe-Worthy First Time on Camera

Let me take you back to when I recorded my very first course video. I had my slides ready, my workbook done, and my lesson outlined perfectly. I had planned for everything—except what it would feel like to hit “record.”

I kid you not, I restarted the video maybe twenty million times. (Okay, maybe just 14, but it felt like a million.) I fumbled over my words, second-guessed my tone, hated how my face moved, and yes—judged myself for my RBF. 😅

I kept thinking:

  • “Who talks like that?”
  • “Why does my voice sound so weird?”
  • “Do I really look like that when I talk?!”

I deleted and re-recorded endlessly. And if you’d seen my first takes, you would’ve thought I was being held hostage. I forgot how to blink, how to smile naturally—how to human.

Creating content felt like a root canal with no anesthesia.

But here’s what I realized in the mess of it all:

You’re not doing it wrong just because you’re awkward. You’re doing it right… because you’re doing it.

There’s No Shortcut to Confidence

There is no magical app or one-click button that makes you good at this overnight. No “perfect” edit or filter that fixes beginner nerves.
You get better at recording, writing, showing up, and speaking—by actually doing it. Again and again.

At first, your voice might shake. You might ramble. You’ll cringe when you watch yourself back.

But the only way to go from “ugh, I hate this” to “hey, I’m kinda proud of that” is to keep going.

I remember asking someone early on how to get better at being on camera. I thought she’d give me a magic tip.

All she said was, “You just do it. Over and over and over again.”

Honestly, I didn’t love that answer… until it clicked.

I thought back to my early days as a hairstylist over 15 years ago. As an introvert, I hated talking to people. But I pushed through. I practiced. And guess what? It got easier. I built a thriving clientele because I kept trying.

Progress Over Perfection: Always

There was a moment everything shifted for me. It wasn’t when I finally “arrived” or felt fully confident. It was when I stopped chasing perfection and started chasing progress.

Perfection will keep you at a standstill.
Progress will keep you moving.

When I gave myself permission to be a beginner—and messy—something shifted. I stopped obsessing over every “umm,” every awkward pause, and every weird angle. (And yes, I still say “I mean…” way too much.)

I showed up. Nervous. Shaky. Real. And it started to feel more natural.

People Don’t Want Perfect—They Want You

Here’s the thing I wish more people knew:

People don’t connect with a polished version of you that seems fake.
They connect with real. The real, messed up, authentic you.

I’ve had people tell me they felt more drawn to my work when I was nervous, raw, and honest. Why? Because they saw themselves in my story.

Your authenticity—your stumbles, your nerves, your cringe-worthy first tries—is what pulls people in. Not your filters. Not your scripts. Not your perfection.

Your voice is powerful. Even when it shakes.
Your message is valid. Even when you fumble through it and everything’s out of order.

Start Scared. Start Imperfect. But Start.

If you’ve been waiting for the perfect moment… this is your sign.

  • Start before you feel ready.
  • Hit record when you still feel awkward.
  • Launch the thing, even if your voice cracks the entire way through.

You’re allowed to grow while people are watching.
You’re allowed to improve after it’s live.
And you’re more than allowed to be a beginner.

Even big names like Amy Porterfield had to start somewhere. She openly shares her early videos—and trust me, they were cringey. But she kept going. And now? She’s built an empire.

The successful people you see didn’t get better because they were naturally confident.
They got better because they didn’t quit.

Your Message Is Bigger Than Your Fear

So friend, here’s what I want you to remember:

✅ It’s okay to start messy.
✅ It’s okay to cringe at your own content.
✅ It’s okay to improve as you go.

Because the only way to get better at anything… is to keep doing it.

Your imperfect start could be someone else’s permission slip to finally take action.
