Have you ever felt like you’re just trying to send one email or record a quick video—and a little one asks for a snack, climbs on your back, or the “battle of the siblings” starts that suddenly needs your immediate attention?
Yup. Me too.
This post is for every mom trying to grow her business while her kids are constantly in the shadows. Because, let’s be honest, the struggle is real. And I want you to know—it’s possible to build something meaningful, even in the middle of motherhood mayhem.
Real Talk: Mom Life + Business = Controlled Chaos (Sometimes)
My kids are a little older now and have some understanding of “quiet time,” but I still vividly remember those early days with toddlers when nap time was more of a hope than a plan.
TV helped sometimes, but only for so long. And I’ve always tried to limit screen time, which means I had to get creative—anything that bought me 20 minutes of quiet to record a lesson or write an email.
But even then, I’d shut the door, turn on my Yeti mic (you know, the kind that blocks out sound from all directions), and inevitably, someone would start yelling in the background.
Even if the mic couldn’t pick it up, my brain definitely could. And staying focused while your kids are screaming at each other? It’s… a talent I’m still developing.
The Guilt is Real, But So is the Goal
Here’s the sort of… tug-of-war: You want to be present with your kids. And you also want to make real progress in your business. That tension? It’s real. But you have permission to pursue both.
You can lovingly distract your kids for short bursts while still being a devoted mom. And you can give them your full attention at other times in the day. This isn’t about being perfect. It’s about being intentional, creative, and flexible.
And most of all, it’s about doing business your way.
Let Go of the 9-to-5 Mentality
One of the first mindset shifts I had to make? Letting go of the idea that I needed eight uninterrupted hours a day to be successful.
Spoiler: You don’t.
Instead, think in pockets of time—15, 20, or 30-minute chunks. Every small step counts. And when you string those pockets together day after day, I mean, you’re building something real.
Even if you’re jotting ideas in your phone notes at the park or recording a voice memo while folding laundry, it’s progress.
Here Are Some Creative Strategies That Help:
1. Work in Short Time Blocks
Whether it’s 15 minutes before bed or 30 minutes after your kids go to sleep—use the time you do have. I’m not a morning person, so I do my best work late at night. Even if it’s a quick email or tweaking my website, I count it as progress.
2. Create a “Business Time” Toy Box
Put together a box of fun toys or activities your kids only get access to when you’re working. This will keep them engaged and excited when the box comes out—and quiet—for longer stretches. And the best part? They know that they only get the fun box if they are quiet for “x” amount of time! Horay!
3. Leverage Screen Time (Guilt-Free)
If screen time can buy you an hour to batch content or plan a launch, that’s a win. Try putting on a movie they haven’t seen yet (if that’s still possible 😅), and let them know it’s your “work time.”
4. Work During Their Activities
Bring your phone (or laptop, if that’s your thing) to activities like practices or playtime at the park. I usually sit with my phone on the bench while my kids play—brainstorming or jotting down ideas.
5. Use Voice Notes On the Go
Record thoughts or podcast ideas while driving, folding laundry, or doing chores. Even if you don’t publish them, you’re capturing inspiration instead of losing it.
6. Use Weekends Strategically
Ask for help—whether that’s from your spouse, a grandparent, or a sitter. Even one day a week where you can lock in and work without interruptions can feel like magic. Treat it like your business workday and knock things out. Hello 9-5 workday!
Final Thoughts: Success Doesn’t Require Perfection
I want to leave you with this reminder: You don’t need long hours or perfect conditions to build something powerful.
You just need to start—messy, interrupted, and all.
Even if all you manage today is 10 minutes while your kids are occupied, that’s enough. You’re showing up. You’re building momentum. And you’re proving to yourself—and your family—that your dreams matter too.
Let’s redefine productivity and success. It’s not about hustle. It’s about heart, intention, and creativity.
You’ve got this, mama. ❤️
